To Vietnam, she was Canadian; to Cambodia, she was Vietnamese. To the rest of the world, she was just Asian.
A weekend trip to Athens turned into an unexpected turn during the Covid-19 lockdown, where she found her home forever.

Renie Tiêu is a multidisciplinary food specialist who thinks in seven languages.

For our upcoming supper club in Athens, Renie is taking us through her ideal day in the city, sharing the places, flavours and rituals that inspire her, and giving us a glimpse into the world that shapes her cooking.

Start your morning the way Athenians do: with a stop at Mitsos Pies. Grab a warm, flaky pie and a coffee, then spend the morning wandering the city's streets, where ancient ruins, neighborhood cafés, and everyday life all seem to exist side by side.

When lunchtime rolls around, skip the tourist traps and settle into one of the city's traditional taverns. Athenee, Mavros Gatos, and Tavern Sinansis are all favorites for long, leisurely meals built around simple Greek dishes and plenty of sharing.

As the afternoon slows down, there's only one thing left to do: find something sweet. A stop at Baklavas is non-negotiable. Order a piece (or two) and enjoy one of Greece's most beloved desserts exactly where it belongs.

For a quick bite later in the day, nothing beats souvlaki. Giorgos and Kyr Giannis Kebebzidikon are our go-to spots—unpretentious, delicious, and proof that some of the best meals in Athens come wrapped in paper.

As evening approaches, Athens truly comes alive. For dinner, book a table at one of the city's neo-taverns. Akra and Iodio offer a fresh, contemporary take on Greek cuisine, while Soil delivers a more refined Michelin-starred experience for those looking to celebrate a special occasion.

End the night at Lou. Order a drink, find a seat, and settle into the easy rhythm that makes Athens so hard to leave. The city isn't about rushing from landmark to landmark—it's about good food, good company, and letting the day unfold at its own pace.
